Most LBC members at all levels play primarily in club pairs games where matchpoint scoring is used. While this method of scoring is certainly exciting it does not help prepare players to play in team events at tournaments where IMP scoring is common. To help familiarize players with IMP scoring, LBC is starting another IMP league (for LBC members only) beginning in January 2021. Dwight Bender will be acting as the coordinator of the league.
The intent of this league is to allow all players at all levels to familiarize themselves with the enjoyment of team play and IMP scoring. To help understand team play and IMP scoring Barry Onslow will be hosting a Zoom session to discuss fundamentals about scoring and tactics. (To be arranged in the week of Jan 14 to 21). It is intended that the format and composition of the teams will provide an opportunity for a brief learning discussion, via a telephone or Zoom conversation, some time after the game. Some teams may consist of players of similar abilities, other teams may include both experts and less experienced. A team of more than 4 may strategize around which players should play a particular match within the regulations described below.

Matches will be played regularly every week starting in mid-January for a period of 8 to 12 weeks depending upon registration numbers. All games will be scheduled to be played on Thursday evenings at 7:30 p.m. on BBO. Specific matches will be listed and a schedule distributed when registration is complete. Alternate playing times are permitted as determined by team captains.
Teams will be divided into at least two brackets ranked by the coordinator. Using a Round Robin format, teams will play other teams in the same bracket once or twice, depending on the number of entries. We hope the event will be sanctioned by the ACBL and MP's will be awarded at the end of the season. All matches will be played on BBO in the "Competitive" section. The schedule will designate which team captain is responsible for setting up the match on BBO each week. Each match will consist of two halves, playing 10 randomly dealt boards in each segment. There will be a break of 10 minutes after the first half of the match. Scoring will be noted at the end of the first half and again at the end of the second half to determine a final score. The cumulative score will be reported to the Coordinator by both team captains before the end of each scoring period. The setting captain will rotate the players at the start of the second half in order to have each pair play a different pair in the second half.
Team Composition and Play Regulations:
Teams must consist of 4 to 6 members. Subject to the Co-ordinator's discretion, one player per team may be a non-LBC member. No substitutions will be permitted. Each of the team members must play at least 50% of the matches scheduled. Any team that fails to field a team will be considered to have forfeited the match. The Coordinator will rank the teams according to the average masterpoints of the team and/or at his discretion in order to divide the teams into a minimum of two brackets.
Should teams not be able to play at their scheduled time or date it will be the responsibility of the captains of the teams involved to arrange a time suitable for all 8 players involved. All matches must be played on BBO. No Undoes will be permitted. In the event of a dispute, a written report shall be submitted to the Coordinator after which a score adjustment may be awarded. No such adjustments will be made except under highly unusual circumstances. Following each match, both captains will report to the Coordinator via email both the final score as well as the names of the participating players. This report must be submitted before the end of each scoring period. Scoring periods will run weekly from Thursday at 9:30 pm until Tuesday at noon.
Registration should be done by the Team Captain only and can be made in the Registration Box at the top right of this page. Names, phone numbers, and email addresses of all team members must be included in the Registration Box. (4, 5, or 6 members are permitted)
Entry fees for the event will be the usual fee of $7 (CAD since fees are being collected in Canada) per player per session. Fees for the entire schedule will be payable by each team captain via e-transfer to LBC no later than 3 days prior to the start of the schedule.
e.g. If each team is scheduled to play 10 games then each team must submit 4 X $7 X 10 =$280 in advance. This total fee does not change if a team has more than 4 members - in that event the cost per member will be a little less as will the number of games played by each member.
Note: If the ACBL does not grant the issuance of Masterpoints the session fee will be reduced to $5. (a request has been submitted to the ACBL and we hope to hear before the league begins)
When we know how many teams are registered we will send another email to captains confirming the number of matches and the fee. Please pay promptly following the directions in that email.
Team Captain's role
Teams will be divided into two or three brackets depending upon the number of registrations received.
Teams will play 2 10-board halves on the specified dates starting on January 21, 2021.
Teams will play either a round-robin or double round-robin event depending on the number of teams registered. The expected total number of games is between 8 and 12, again depending on the number of team entries.
IMP scoring will be used. Scores will be converted to Victory points by the coordinator and posted weekly on the LBC website under the " Game Results" tab.
Substitutes are not permitted.
Both team captains must submit a report as indicated above under "Team Composition and Play" to the Coordinator following the completion of each match and before the end of the scoring period.
Failure to submit a report within the allotted time will result in both teams being awarded an average minus score for the match.
All decisions made by the coordinator will be final.
Caveat: if there are insufficient registrations this League will be canceled.
